The AmmoSpotter Ammo Price Index
A live cost-per-round benchmark for every major cartridge, built from our own listing database rather than from manufacturer MSRP. Updated continuously.
On this page
Most published ammunition pricing is one of two things: manufacturer MSRP, which nobody pays, or a hand-updated article that was accurate the week it was written.
This page is neither. Every figure below is computed at page load from the live retail listings in our database — the same listings that power the deal pages on this site. When the market moves, this page moves.
Methodology
We track live retail listings across the ammunition retailers we monitor. For every listing that publishes a round count, we compute:
price per round = lowest current price / round count
That figure is stored on the listing and recalculated whenever the price changes. We also write a price-history record on every change, which is what makes the trend figures possible.
Three deliberate choices shape these numbers:
- Only in-stock listings count. An out-of-stock listing at a great price is not a price, it is a memory. Listings with no active vendor are excluded, as are storage cases, loose projectiles, unprimed brass and reloading components that carry a caliber but are not ammunition.
- Only ammunition counts. Cost per round is meaningless on a firearm or a magazine, so the metric is gated to ammunition products.
- No MSRP, ever. Every figure traces to a price a retailer is currently asking.

9mm Luger Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 20269mm is the benchmark cartridge for the entire handgun market. It is the highest-production, most price-competitive round in America, and it usually shows the widest gap between the cheapest listing and the market average — which is another way of saying it rewards comparison more than any other caliber. Full guide: best 9mm ammo.
.45 ACP Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026.380 ACP Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026.380 ACP consistently prices above 9mm despite being a smaller cartridge — lower production volume beats material cost. See 9mm vs .45 ACP for the cost comparison that matters most to high-volume shooters.

.223 / 5.56 NATO Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026The AR-15's cartridge, and the rifle round with the most price volatility in the market. Practice-grade 55gr sits at the bottom of this range; match ammunition sits several times higher. Full guide: best 5.56 and .223 ammo.
.308 / 7.62 NATO Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 20267.62x39mm Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 20266.5 Creedmoor Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 20266.5 Creedmoor is a useful case study in what factory match ammunition costs: the cartridge is produced almost entirely in premium loadings, so its market average sits far above cartridges with a large budget-practice segment.
.300 Blackout Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026.30-06 Springfield Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026Rimfire
.22 LR Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026.22 LR remains the cheapest meaningful trigger time available by an enormous margin. For anyone whose training is round-count limited rather than time limited, this is the number that should shape their practice plan.
Shotshells
12 Gauge Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 202620 Gauge Price Index
Live · Oct 10, 2026Shotshell pricing is the most misleading category in the market, because pack sizes vary from 5-round defensive packs to 250-round flats. Per-shell cost is the only honest comparison, and it routinely reveals that the "cheap" 25-round box is worse value than the flat.
What actually moves these numbers
Component supply. Primers are the historical bottleneck. When primer supply tightens, everything moves, and handloading stops being a hedge.
Production allocation. Manufacturers shift line capacity between calibers based on demand. A caliber that gets deprioritized climbs regardless of raw material costs.
Retail promotional cycles. Most of the day-to-day spread you see between the cheapest listing and the average is not supply — it is retailers running independent promotions.
Demand shocks. Political events and supply anxiety drive demand faster than production can respond. The tell is a compressing gap between cheapest and average: when everything sells through, the promotional floor disappears first.
Using this data
If you are buying today, compare the market-floor figure for your caliber against what you are about to pay. If you are within a few percent of the floor, buy. If you are near the average, you have room to do better.
If you are stocking up, watch the trend figure. Buying into a rising market is how people end up with expensive ammunition they bought in a panic.
If you are planning training, use these numbers to build an honest annual budget. Round count times cost per round is your training cost, and it is usually the constraint people are actually operating under.
