Carry Ammo Is Two Purchases, Not One
Almost every "best carry ammo" article gets the economics backwards. It ranks defensive loads on price, as if the cost of a hollow point mattered.
It doesn't. You carry roughly one magazine of defensive ammunition plus a spare. Whether that costs a little or a lot is a rounding error against what you will spend feeding the same pistol at the range.
The purchase that actually matters is the practice ammunition — the FMJ you burn confirming you can still hit things. That is where caliber choice hits your wallet, and it is where a live price index earns its keep. So this guide treats each cartridge as two questions: what does the defensive load cost, and what does it cost to stay proficient with it?
Defensive Loads Worth Knowing By Name
These are live listings from our index — short-barrel-optimized defensive loads across the common carry calibers.
Carry Loads in Our Index Right Now

SPEER AMMO 9mm 135Gr Gold Dot Carry Gun HP 20rd
Speer's Gold Dot Carry Gun line is loaded specifically for short barrels, which is the whole problem with carrying a compact 9mm — standard defensive loads are developed on longer test barrels than the one in your holster.

SPEER AMMO 40 SW 165Gr Gold Dot Carry Gun HP 20rd
The same short-barrel philosophy in .40. If you already own the gun, .40 remains entirely viable; the argument against it was always about recoil and cost, never about terminal performance.

SPEER AMMO Gold Dot Carry Gun 45 ACP +P 200 gr Hollow Point Ammunition | 20 Rounds
A 200-grain +P bonded hollow point. The +P designation matters here: confirm your specific pistol is rated for it before carrying it, and confirm it feeds and shoots to point of aim in your gun.

FEDERAL AMMO PUNCH 30 Super Carry 103gr Jacketed Hollow Point Ammunition | 20 Rounds
Federal Punch in the newest mainstream carry cartridge. Worth knowing about mainly because the pitch is capacity: more rounds in the same frame size than 9mm.
Note what those per-round figures look like next to the practice pricing below. That gap is the entire point.
9mm: Why It Wins on Volume, Not Ballistics
9mm is the default carry cartridge, and the honest reason is economic rather than terminal. It is the most heavily stocked handgun cartridge we track, and depth of supply is what keeps a cartridge cheap and available.
9mm Luger Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026The consequence is straightforward: 9mm lets you shoot more for the same money, and shooting more is the only variable in this entire discussion with a large, well-established effect on outcomes. If you are undecided, this is the answer.

.380 ACP: The Cartridge You Carry When You Won't Carry Anything Else
.380 exists because the guns chambered in it disappear under clothing. That is a real advantage, and a pistol you carry beats a pistol you leave at home.
The trade-offs are honest ones: less energy on tap, and — because the pistols are small and light — recoil that is often less pleasant than a compact 9mm despite the smaller cartridge. Practice cost is the other consideration.
.380 ACP Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026Compare that to the 9mm index above before you commit. If .380 practice ammunition prices near or above 9mm in your area, the case for the cartridge rests entirely on the size of the pistol.
Full listings: .380 ACP ammo.
.38 Special and .357 Magnum: The Revolver Answer
A small revolver remains a legitimate carry choice, particularly for pocket carry and for shooters who want a manual of arms with fewer steps.
.38 Special Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026.357 Magnum Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026The practical approach most revolver carriers land on: a .357 Magnum revolver shot mostly with .38 Special. You get the option of the more powerful cartridge without paying for it — or absorbing its recoil and muzzle blast — on every practice round. Full-power .357 out of a short barrel is genuinely unpleasant to shoot in volume, which means less practice, which is the wrong direction.
Compare listings: .38 Special and .357 Magnum.
.45 ACP and .40 S&W: Fine Cartridges, Worse Economics
Neither of these is a bad choice, and if you already own the pistol there is no reason to sell it.
.45 ACP Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026.40 S&W Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026What killed .40 S&W's dominance was not performance — it was that improvements in 9mm defensive ammunition erased most of the practical gap while 9mm remained cheaper and easier to shoot fast. .45 ACP carries the same tax with the added cost of lower capacity in the same frame size.
Read those two indexes against 9mm and decide whether the difference is worth it to you at your annual round count. How many rounds it takes to get good is the number to run it against.
Listings: .45 ACP and .40 S&W.
10mm Auto: A Woods Cartridge That Some People Conceal
10mm is genuinely more powerful than the rest of this list, which makes it a reasonable choice where large animals are a realistic concern. As a daily concealed carry cartridge it is a harder sell: bigger guns, more recoil, and the thinnest supply of the mainstream options.
10mm Auto Price Index
Live · Oct 30, 2026That per-round figure is the honest constraint. Practicing enough to shoot 10mm well costs more than practicing enough to shoot 9mm well.
Full listings: 10mm Auto ammo.
What About the Newer and Smaller Options?
30 Super Carry is the most recent mainstream entry, pitched on capacity — more rounds in the same frame as a comparable 9mm. Real listings exist: Federal Punch runs $22.99 for 20 rounds ($1.150 per round), and both Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot run $32.07 for 20 ($1.604 per round). Practice ammunition is available too — Blazer 115-grain FMJ at $17.99 for 50 rounds ($0.360 per round), and Federal American Eagle 100-grain at $19.15 for 50 ($0.383 per round). The open question is not performance but whether retail supply stays deep enough to keep those prices honest. What actually happens when a new cartridge launches is worth reading before you commit a carry gun to one.
.32 ACP persists in very small pistols and we do track it, but supply is thin relative to the calibers above.
How to Actually Choose
- Pick the gun first. The pistol you will carry every day constrains the caliber, not the other way around.
- Buy one box of a reputable defensive load and fire enough of it to confirm your pistol feeds it and shoots to point of aim with it. This is non-negotiable and it is the only "testing" that applies to your specific gun.
- Carry that load. Practice with FMJ of the same bullet weight so recoil and point of impact stay familiar.
- Buy practice ammunition on price, by the case, when the price is genuinely low — not when you happen to be out.
That last point is where most of the money is won or lost. Why ammo prices move covers the forces behind the swings, and they are large enough to matter across a year of practice.
