Best Concealed Carry Holsters

We do not test holsters. We price 74,000 accessory listings — and the cheap end of every holster category is not what you think it is.

Best Concealed Carry Holsters

What actually separates a good carry holster from a bad one

There are four requirements. They are not subtle and they are not matters of taste.

Full trigger coverage. The trigger guard must be completely enclosed by rigid material, with nothing — not a drawstring, not a shirt tail, not a finger — able to reach the trigger while the pistol is holstered. This is the entire reason a holster exists.

Retention that survives inversion. Turn the holstered pistol upside down and shake it. If the gun moves, it will move when you do.

A mouth that stays open. You must be able to reholster with one hand, looking at what you are doing, without any part of you or your clothing entering the holster. A soft pouch that collapses flat the moment the pistol clears it fails this, and that failure mode is where the serious accidents live.

Consistent index. The holster must return to the same position on the belt every time you put it on, because your draw is a trained motor pattern and the pattern assumes a location.

Notice that none of those four are things a review can rank by feel. They are pass/fail. Once a holster passes all four, the remaining decisions — material, position, clip style — are genuinely personal, and the honest job of a buying guide is to tell you what each option costs.

What the cheap end of the holster market actually contains

This is the part a site without a catalog cannot tell you. Sort inside-the-waistband holsters by price, cheapest first, and look at what comes back:

At the bottom of that list you will find one-size-fits-many nylon sleeves sized by number rather than by pistol, and — in the same category — magazine pouches, which are not holsters at all. The "Concealment Holsters" category is worse: its cheapest listings include holster comfort pads and a bedside mounting bracket. These are legitimate products, miscategorized by the retailers' own feeds, and they are why "cheapest concealed carry holster" is a search that leads people somewhere unhelpful.

The practical filter: if the listing sizes itself by a number instead of by your pistol's model name, it is a universal nylon sleeve. Those can be fine for a range bag or a truck, and they are the wrong answer for something that rides against your body with a round chambered.

IWB, pocket, ankle or shoulder: which position actually conceals

Inside-the-waistband dominates for a reason — it is the only position that hides a full-size grip under an untucked shirt. The others solve narrower problems:

Pocket carry works with one category of pistol and demands a holster that breaks up the outline and stays in the pocket when the gun leaves it.

Ankle carry is genuinely invisible while seated and slow from every other posture. It is a backup position, not a primary one.

Shoulder rigs trade concealment under a cover garment for a draw path that sweeps across your own support arm and anyone standing beside you. If you carry one, the draw needs deliberate practice, not casual practice.

Paddle and belt holsters are outside-the-waistband — faster, more comfortable, and dependent on a jacket or an overshirt to stay concealed.

Molded polymer or leather: what the price difference buys

Molded shells are cut to a specific slide and trigger guard. That is where retention comes from, and it is why the mouth stays rigid for one-handed reholstering. Per-model tooling also means makers tend to charge a flat price across every pistol they fit — in our snapshot, one maker's modular carry package was listed at $115.88 across Glock 17, Glock 19, the Sig P365 and P365XL, the P320, a Springfield XDS, a Hellcat and a Taurus PT111. Fitting an unusual gun rarely costs more; it just limits selection.

Leather is quieter against the body and conforms with use. It also softens with use, and a leather holster whose mouth has collapsed is a holster that has failed one of the four requirements. Tuckable leather designs — the ones with a clip that lets you fold a shirt over the gun — buy the deepest concealment available short of not carrying.

For clothing that will not take a belt at all — athletic wear, most notably — a neoprene band is the honest compromise. Our snapshot had one listed at $28.99. It is slower, it holds the pistol less precisely, and it is far better than the alternative of leaving the gun at home and pretending otherwise.

One Holster Per Carry Problem, Priced Live

The belt is half the holster

An inside-the-waistband holster transfers the pistol's weight to your belt. A dress belt folds under that load, the grip rolls outward, and the gun prints — and no amount of holster quality fixes it.

Be warned that this is a hard thing to shop for in a catalog: sorting our belt listings by price returns ammunition belt pouches, shotshell carriers and belt keepers long before it returns anything you would thread through a pair of trousers. Search by the term "gun belt" specifically, look for a reinforced or laminated core, and expect to pay real money for it. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade to a carry setup that most people never make.

Budget the practice, not just the holster

A holster is not a purchase; it is the start of a training obligation. The draw is a motor skill, it decays, and it is the single most consequential thing you will do with a carry pistol.

That makes ammunition the largest line in a carry budget over any reasonable time horizon — larger than the holster, the belt and the sights combined. We cover how many rounds it actually takes to get competent separately, and the honest answer is more than most people budget for.

Cheapest 9mm Practice Ammo by the Case

Prices updated Oct 30, 2026

Two things worth separating. Practice ammunition is bought on cost per round and volume; carry ammunition is bought on terminal performance and then verified by running some of it through your specific pistol. Our 9mm guide splits range, carry and duty loads, and our carry ammo guide covers the same question across the other common defensive calibers. Prices in both categories move on forces that have nothing to do with you, so buying practice ammunition by the case at a low point is the highest-leverage thing in this entire article.

While you are budgeting: you need more magazines than the two in the box, and we worked through how many is actually enough. If you have not settled on the pistol yet, start with our concealed carry pistol guide — the holster selection for a given gun should be part of that decision, not an afterthought.

Compare current pricing on the 9mm ammunition page, or browse everything we track. Ordering online carries its own logistics — check shipping restrictions before you build a cart.

What to confirm before you carry it

The buying order that works: choose the pistol, choose the position, buy a molded holster cut for that exact model, buy a reinforced belt in the same order, and then spend the rest on ammunition and repetitions. Nobody has ever regretted the belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best type of concealed carry holster?+
Inside-the-waistband at the appendix or strong-side hip conceals the widest range of pistols under the widest range of clothing, which is why it dominates the category by listing count. Pocket, ankle and shoulder rigs each solve a narrower problem — a specific gun, a specific garment, or a seated posture — at the cost of draw speed. Start with IWB unless you have a reason not to.
Is a cheap concealed carry holster safe to use?+
Price is not the test; construction is. The holster must cover the trigger guard completely, hold the pistol when inverted and shaken, and keep its mouth open so you can reholster without putting a hand or a garment inside it. Plenty of inexpensive molded holsters meet all three. Soft one-size nylon pouches that collapse when the gun comes out generally do not.
Kydex or leather for concealed carry?+
Molded polymer keeps a rigid mouth for one-handed reholstering, holds retention indefinitely and is cheaper to produce per gun model. Leather is quieter, more comfortable against skin, and conforms over time — but it softens, and a collapsed leather mouth is a real safety problem. Hybrids put a molded shell on a backing panel to get some of both.
Do I need a special belt for concealed carry?+
Yes, and it is the most commonly skipped purchase. A normal dress belt folds under the weight of a loaded pistol, which lets the grip roll outward and print. A reinforced gun belt is what makes an inside-the-waistband holster sit flat and stay put. Budget for it at the same time as the holster.
Does a holster have to fit my exact pistol model?+
For molded holsters, effectively yes — the retention comes from the shell matching that slide and trigger guard. Universal nylon holsters fit loosely by design, which is why they show up at the bottom of every price sort. Note that many manufacturers price a given holster identically across every pistol they cut it for, so fitting an uncommon gun rarely costs more.
How much should I expect to spend on a carry holster?+
The live grids in this article show current pricing by category rather than a figure that goes stale. The useful way to budget is as a set: holster, reinforced belt, and enough practice ammunition to actually train the draw from it. The ammunition is usually the largest of the three over a year.
