Best Range Bags

There is no range bag category. The 241 listings that call themselves one are scattered across 21 different shelves, 43 of 1,091 say how many guns they hold, and the bag is the most price-shoppable thing you will put in your cart.

Best Range Bags

Is there such a thing as a range bag shelf?

No. That is the first useful thing to know about this purchase.

We track 241 live listings whose titles call themselves a range bag, a range pack or a shooting bag. They are distributed across 21 different category-and-type combinations. Ninety-eight sit in Carrying Bags, which is filed under outdoor gear alongside hunting packs. Thirty-nine have no category at all. Twenty-three are in Gun Rests, twenty-three in Gun Gear, nine in soft cases and four in hard cases. Eleven are typed as firearms and eleven as ammunition — those are guns and cartridge lots sold with a bag thrown in.

Search our whole category list for the word "range" and you get exactly one match: Range Finders.

So "range bag" is a shopping phrase, not a shelf. Nobody in the supply chain agrees on where to file one, which is why comparing them is harder than comparing almost any other piece of range gear.

What does a range bag actually cost right now?

Taking the three shelves where real bags live — carrying bags, soft cases and backpacks — plus every range-bag-titled listing elsewhere, we get a combined shelf of 1,091 listings, from $4.29 to $2,199.99. The bottom quartile ends at $29.99, the median is $56.95, the top quartile starts at $99.99, and the mean is $86.52, dragged up by a long premium tail.

Broken out by shelf:

CategoryListingsFloorMedian
Gun Cases — Hard775$5.59$46.69
Carrying Bags410$6.09$49.69
Gun Cases — Soft347$4.29$47.49
Backpacks202$7.09$94.99
Gun Gear1,123$0.47$39.99

The practical read: a genuine range bag starts around $21, the middle of the market is high forties to high fifties, and the medians of three different shelves land within three dollars of each other. There is no price tier that distinguishes a "range bag" from a soft case.

Why is the cheapest "range bag" listing a divider?

Because price-sorting these aisles does not return bags. It returns the small stuff filed beside them.

What the Cheap End of the Carrying Bags Aisle Actually Contains

Prices updated Oct 26, 2026

Read those titles. A tool roll, an accessory pouch, three range bag inserts — dividers, not bags — a folding dump pouch and a shotshell carrier. Not one of the eight is a range bag. Of the 410 listings in that category, 283 have a bag, case or pack word in the title at all, which means roughly a third of the aisle is pouches, carriers and inserts.

The same trap is worse one shelf over. Gun Gear looks like it should be the range-gear aisle; it has 1,123 listings and a $39.99 median. Price-sort it and the first six rows are a bottle of rust preventative and five morale patches at $1.99. Three hundred and fifty-eight of its 1,123 listings are one patch-and-apparel brand.

Almost no listing tells you how many guns it holds

This is the real problem with the category, and it is the same silent-omission pattern we keep finding on AR parts and optics.

Across all 1,091 bag listings: 43 state a pistol or gun count. 94 state dimensions. 18 mention a lock. 15 mention a strap. 12 mention weather resistance. 9 state a capacity figure. 4 mention magazine storage.

Two consequences. First, a grid of these listings can be honest about price and cannot be honest about fit, so treat any ranking by capacity with suspicion — ours included. Second, the brands that do state dimensions are worth a premium purely for that.

The Bag Tiers, Priced Live

Bulldog Gray Pistol Rug- XSmall
The no-bag option

Bulldog Gray Pistol Rug- XSmall

A zippered pistol rug at two retailers, and the honest baseline for this whole article. If you own one handgun and drive to an indoor range, this plus a grocery tote does the job a $60 bag does. It is worth knowing that the floor of this decision is under seven dollars before you shop the rest of it.

Allen ELIMINATOR BASIC RANGE BAG
Cheapest genuine range bag

Allen ELIMINATOR BASIC RANGE BAG

The cheapest listing in our index that is actually a range bag rather than a divider, a pouch or a sandbag — at two retailers, which matters on this shelf. No listed pistol count and no dimensions, which is typical: only 43 of 1,091 bag listings state how many guns they hold.

Bulldog Range Bag ECON with Strap Black
Cheapest with a stated strap

Bulldog Range Bag ECON with Strap Black

Two retailers, and the title tells you there is a shoulder strap — one of only 15 listings on the combined bag shelf that mention one. That sounds trivial until you carry a loaded bag, ammunition included, from the far end of a car park.

US PeaceKeeper Mini Range Bag Black
Compact, dimensions stated

US PeaceKeeper Mini Range Bag Black

A mini range bag at two retailers from a maker that prints dimensions in most of its titles. It sits just under the $29.99 quartile of the combined bag shelf, so this is roughly where the bottom quarter of the market ends rather than a bargain.

The bag is the most price-shoppable thing on this page

Here the data is unusually clear, and it points the opposite way from almost everything else we track.

Hard cases are stocked by more than one retailer 61.5% of the time. Soft cases, 54.8%. Carrying bags, 49.3%. Accessories as a whole run 36.6%, and ammunition only 25.3%. On top of that, the cross-retailer spread is real: among multi-retailer carrying bags the median gap is 5.50% with 34.7% of them 10% or more apart and a maximum of 64.19%; soft cases run a 6.79% median gap, 38.9% at 10%-plus, maximum 69.36%.

Now the other lever. Only 34.6% of carrying bags and 41.5% of soft cases sit above their own recorded low. Ammunition sits above its own low 69.8% of the time.

So the rule for this purchase writes itself: compare retailers on the bag, set an alert on the cartridge. Waiting for a bag to drop is a poor use of patience; checking a second retailer for the same bag is frequently worth ten or fifteen percent today.

…and the aisle that looks most like range gear is single-sourced

One exception worth knowing. Gun Gear, the 1,123-listing shelf, is 0.0% multi-retailer — not a single product in it is stocked by two of our retailers. Its 47.7% above-own-low rate is the highest of any bag-adjacent shelf.

That inverts the advice for anything you find there: you cannot comparison-shop it, so the only lever is timing.

Purpose-Built Range Gear, Cheapest First

The first rows there are utility pouches and soft ammunition carriers; the double pistol cases start at $29.99. That ordering is the shelf, not a mistake.

What actually goes in the bag, and what it costs

This is where our price data earns its place, because every one of these is a category we track daily.

WhatListingsFloorMedian

Two caveats before anyone quotes those floors. The cleaning-mat floor is a packet of cleaning patches, not a mat — real mats start around $6. And the eye-protection aisle price-sorts with a decontamination wipe and a lens cloth mixed in among genuine glasses.

Convert the bag you own

NCStar 2904B Range Bag Insert Black

A padded divider insert at two retailers. Drop it into a duffel you already have and you have built the only feature a range bag really sells — compartments that keep a pistol off a bottle of solvent. This is the cheapest honest answer to the question this article is about.

Radians MR0140ID Mirage Shooting Glasses
Eye protection

Radians MR0140ID Mirage Shooting Glasses

The cheapest listing in a 341-row eye protection category, at two retailers. There is no sensible argument for shooting without it and no sensible argument for spending more than this until you want a specific tint. The category median is $19.29, so the floor here is a genuine floor and not a stripped-down trap.

Hearing protection deserves more than a line in a table, and we have put a whole piece into it: the best hearing protection for shooting includes the finding that the electronic muffs with the higher price tags attenuate less than cheap passive ones. Likewise the mat-and-solvent side is covered in the gun cleaning kit guide.

Do you need a bag at all?

Honestly, often not. If you own one handgun and shoot at an indoor range, a $6.99 pistol rug and any tote you already own covers it, and a $7.59 divider insert turns a duffel into the thing a range bag is actually selling.

Pistol Rugs — The Minimum Viable Option

Prices updated Oct 26, 2026

The case for a real bag is specific: more than one firearm, more than one caliber, an outdoor range, or a drive long enough that you need everything in one trip from the car. If none of those apply, the money is better spent downrange.

What does a bag cost in ammunition?

This is the comparison that matters, and it is the one no bag review makes.

Put differently: the entire gear decision on this page costs less than two trips to the range. The bag is a one-time purchase that you will own for a decade; the ammunition is a recurring bill that will outspend it inside a month of regular practice. That is the whole argument for spending ten minutes on the cartridge and five on the bag — and how many rounds it takes to get good puts a real number on the recurring side. How many magazines you actually need is the other line item that quietly outgrows the bag.

For the loads themselves, the 9mm ammunition guide covers what the floor consists of, and the .22 LR guide covers the cheapest way to fill the same bag. All the live prices here come from our 9mm deal index and the wider accessories index.

What to check before you buy a range bag

  • How many firearms it holds. 43 of 1,091 listings say. If it matters, buy from a brand that prints dimensions.
  • Whether a second retailer stocks it. Over half of soft and hard cases are listed twice, and the gap can exceed 10%.
  • Whether you are looking at a bag, an insert, a pouch or a bench rest. All four appear in the same search.
  • Whether a strap is included. 15 of 1,091 listings mention one.
  • Whether a hard case is the real requirement. If the goal is secure or lawful transport, that is a different category.

What this guide will not claim

We have not loaded these bags, dropped them, soaked them or worn a strap out. We do not do that, and we will not imply otherwise — the same principle we set out in how we rank ammunition. What we can tell you is what every one of these listings costs, at how many retailers, against its own history, and which specifications the listings state and which they quietly omit.

On this shelf the omission is the finding. A category where 96% of listings will not tell you how many guns fit is a category where durability rankings from anyone — including us — should be read as opinion. The prices are not opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on a range bag?+
The combined bag and soft-case shelf we track runs from $4.29 to $2,199.99 with a median of $56.95 and a bottom quartile ending at $29.99. A genuine range bag starts around $21. Most of what you pay above about $60 buys material quality, waterproofing and brand rather than more compartments, and almost none of it is described in the listing.
What is the difference between a range bag and a soft gun case?+
A soft case is shaped to one firearm and protects it in transit. A range bag is a box with compartments meant to carry ammunition, magazines, eye and ear protection, a mat and tools, usually with a pistol pocket or two. In our index they sit in different categories — 410 listings under carrying bags and 347 under soft cases — and the cheap end of the soft-case shelf is pistol rugs under $8.
What should go in a range bag?+
Eye protection, hearing protection, a cleaning mat, boxes for loose ammunition, spare magazines or a magazine pouch, a basic tool, staples or tape for targets, and a marker. Using the floor of each category in our index, that set comes to well under $40 before ammunition. The ammunition is the part that costs real money and the part worth tracking.
Is it worth buying a bag with a lockable zipper?+
It can be, but you mostly cannot shop for it: only 18 of 1,091 bag listings mention locking at all. If secure transport is the actual requirement, a hard case is the category designed for it, and some jurisdictions treat a locked container as a condition of lawful transport. Verify your own state's rule rather than relying on a product title.
Should I shop around for a range bag or wait for a price drop?+
Shop around. Soft cases are stocked by more than one retailer 54.8% of the time and hard cases 61.5%, versus 36.6% across accessories generally, and the cross-retailer spread runs past 60% at the extreme. Only about 40% sit above their own recorded low, so waiting pays far less than comparing. Ammunition is the opposite case and belongs on an alert.
