Best Semi-Auto Shotguns for Clays and Waterfowl

1,254 live listings, a median over a thousand dollars, and a catalog that serves duck hunters far better than clays shooters. Here is where the money actually goes.

Best Semi-Auto Shotguns for Clays and Waterfowl

What does a semi-auto shotgun cost right now?

1,254 live listings, from $164.99 to $3,649. The median is $1,039.99, the quartiles are $729.00 and $1,699.99, and the ninth decile is $2,129.99. By band: 120 listings under $400, 104 in the $400s and $500s, 167 in the $600s and $700s, 185 in the $800s and $900s, then the largest single block — 291 listings between $1,000 and $1,499 — before 196 in the $1,500s to $1,900s and 181 above $2,000.

For comparison, the pump median is $419.99 and the over-under median is $1,999.99. The semi-auto sits almost exactly between them, which is the honest summary of the whole category: it is the mid-priced action.

Here is the bottom of the market, so you know what the floor consists of:

The action tax: what the same maker charges for a semi-auto over its pump

Everyone knows a semi-auto costs more than a pump. What nobody publishes is how much more, from the same maker, on the same day. Average listing price in our two categories:

MakerPump averageSemi-auto averageStep up
Charles Daly$311.10$352.27~13%
Escort$278.71$353.51~27%
Mossberg$545.43$835.12~53%
Winchester$417.12$1,010.44~142%
Benelli$621.73$2,048.54~230%

Those are averages over every live listing we hold for each maker in each category, which for Winchester and Mossberg means hundreds of rows and for Benelli means eleven pumps against a hundred semi-autos — so read the bottom row as a direction, not a decimal.

That spread is the single most useful thing in this article. "Semi-autos cost more" is useless advice when the premium ranges from a rounding error to triple. If the gas system is what you want and the budget is what it is, the makers at the top of that table hand it to you cheaply — and the makers at the bottom are selling you something other than the action.

This is a waterfowl catalog with a clays corner

The brief for this piece was clays and waterfowl. The catalog does not treat them as equals.

607 of 1,254 listings carry a camo or waterfowl finish — Realtree, Mossy Oak, Max-7, Bottomland — averaging $1,255.85. Another 79 state a 3.5 inch chamber, averaging $1,304.05. Barrel lengths cluster exactly where duck hunters want them: 435 listings at 24 to 26 inches, 557 at 27 to 28 inches.

Now the clays side. Just 44 listings state a barrel of 29 inches or more, from $589.99 to $3,549, averaging $1,797.29 — the most expensive barrel bucket in the category. Only 47 listings use a sporting, trap, skeet or competition word in the title, and those average $1,667.91.

Two other things the data says out loud: left-handed listings number 30 out of 1,254, and youth or compact models — 75 listings averaging $767.98 — are the cheapest feature group in the category rather than the usual premium. If either applies to you, that is worth knowing before you fall for a gun you cannot buy.

Under $700: Retay, TriStar and the imports

This is where the value is, and two brands dominate it.

Retay Semi-Autos, Cheapest First

Prices updated Oct 10, 2026

Retay is the fourth-largest brand here with 118 listings from $299.99, and it has something no premium brand does: 73.7% of its listings are carried by more than one retailer, against 16.9% for Browning and 9.3% for Winchester. A Retay is a gun you can actually price-shop.

TriStar Semi-Autos, Cheapest First

Prices updated Oct 10, 2026

TriStar's 59 listings start at $409.99 and average $676.68, with 66.1% multi-vendor coverage. It is also, as noted above, where the cheapest 30 inch barrel in the category lives. Escort sits one rung lower still — 29 listings from $287.99, averaging $353.51 — and is the maker whose semi-autos cost closest to its own pumps.

What you give up down here is resale value, trigger feel, and the depth of the parts and stock-fitting ecosystem. What you do not give up, on the evidence of retailer coverage, is availability.

$700 to $1,100: the SX4, the 940 and the inertia guns

The band where most people should probably be shopping.

Winchester SX4 Semi-Autos, Cheapest First

Prices updated Oct 10, 2026

Winchester is the second-largest brand here — 151 listings from $669.99, averaging $1,010.44 — and the cheapest rows are the short-barrelled Defender variants rather than field guns, so read the barrel length before you click. Mossberg's 47 listings start at $469.99 and average $835.12; Stoeger's 30 start at $603.99 and average $723.60.

One caution on Stoeger: only 6.7% of its listings are multi-vendor and 90% sit above their own recorded low. It is a well-priced gun that our data says is rarely discounted and rarely comparable. Buy it when you need it, not because you found a deal.

Beretta's cheapest listings are used guns

This one matters, because it will distort any price comparison you make by eye.

Across all 1,254 semi-auto listings, only 14 are flagged used or open-box — about 1%, against 0.3% across our whole firearm catalog. Ten of those fourteen are Beretta. That is 10.1% of Beretta's 99 listings, roughly thirty times the catalog-wide rate.

The consequence: Beretta's apparent entry price of $679.99 is a used A300 Ultima. Its cheapest listing not flagged used is $969.99 — a $290 difference that has nothing to do with the gun and everything to do with what is on the shelf.

Beretta Semi-Autos, Cheapest First — Read the Titles

Prices updated Oct 10, 2026

The titles in that grid carry the condition flag, which is why we are telling you to read them rather than quietly filtering them out. A used A300 at $679.99 may well be the best value on this page. It is not a new gun at $679.99, and nobody should discover that at the counter.

What a Browning or Benelli floor price actually buys

Browning is the largest brand in the category: 166 listings, nothing below $1,159.99, averaging $1,827.94. Benelli is the ceiling: 102 listings, nothing below $1,428.99, averaging $2,048.54.

Benelli Semi-Autos, Cheapest First

Prices updated Oct 10, 2026

Our price-history data says something unusual about both. 97.0% of Browning listings and 94.1% of Benelli listings sit above their own recorded low, against roughly 43% across the firearm catalog as a whole. These brands essentially do not go on sale in our feeds. If you have decided on one, waiting is not a strategy; the price you see is the price.

That is a different argument from whether they are worth it. A Silver Field at $1,159.99 and a Maverick SA at $469.99 both cycle birdshot. You are buying balance, barrel quality, trigger, warranty depth and the fact that a Benelli holds its value — none of which is in our data, and none of which we are going to pretend to have measured.

Shop around, or wait?

For a high-ticket category, the answer is lopsided toward waiting.

356 of 1,254 listings (28.4%) are stocked by more than one retailer, and on those the median spread between the cheapest and dearest in-stock vendor is just 1.56%, or $9.00. Only 16% differ by 10% or more. Cross-shopping a semi-auto usually buys you lunch.

The tail is where it stops being lunch. The widest live gaps we can see include a Sauer SL5 XT at $1,011.99 against $1,499.00 — $487 on one gun — a Weatherby Sorix at $1,119.99 against $1,528.99, a Browning Maxus II at $1,703.99 against $1,982.99, and a Retay Gordion Turkey at $549.99 against $789.99. Worth one check, not worth a week.

Timing is the bigger lever. 865 of 1,254 listings (69.0%) are priced above their own recorded low since February 2026, median gap 7.36% and upper quartile 14.06%. On this category's prices that is a median of $76 and an upper quartile of $159 — real money, and far more than the median shop-around saving.

Shotshells are the one cartridge family where pack size is almost never your friend: of 1,973 live 12 gauge listings, 1,830 are 25 shells or fewer and only 66 reach a 250-shell flat — which is the largest pack we see at all. The flat is also where the per-shell price collapses:

Then chokes. We track 1,060 choke tube listings averaging $55.74, and the cheap end is a trap: 143 of them are cases, wrenches and keys rather than chokes. The 917 actual chokes start at $5.79. A waterfowl-specific warning — only 19 listings state steel-shot compatibility in the title, so you cannot shop that attribute on any site and must check the manufacturer's rating before you put steel through an aftermarket tube. Which constriction for which target is covered in our choke and shot size chart, and the load side for clays is in best 12 gauge target loads.

Two practical notes before you order. Listed prices in our feeds are item-only — we carry no shipping data, and a 250-shell flat is heavy enough that shipping changes the arithmetic. And shells do not ship everywhere: check ammo shipping restrictions first. If prices are moving while you plan a season, why ammo prices move covers what is actually behind it, and how many rounds it takes to get good puts numbers on the volume question.

How we picked these

We did not pick them in the usual sense. Every grid on this page is a live query against our own retailer listings, sorted by price, so it shows what is in stock as you read rather than a ranking frozen months ago. What we add is the comparison no single retailer can: 1,254 listings counted by brand, barrel length, chamber and finish, each measured against its own price history and its coverage across retailers.

What we deliberately do not do is test. We do not pattern barrels, we do not run round counts to failure, and we do not publish recoil figures as if we had measured them. Where a judgement needs a range session, we say so and leave it to you. Our full position on that is in how AmmoSpotter ranks ammunition.

One limit worth stating: fewer than a dozen listings name their operating system, so we cannot tell you from data whether a given gun is gas or inertia. That is a specification question for the maker, not a price question. When you have chosen, how to buy a gun online and FFL transfers explained covers the transfer fee and paperwork that sit on top of every price here.

AmmoSpotter earns a commission when you buy through links on this page. It never changes what you pay, and it never decides what we recommend — our picks are ranked on live cost-per-round data pulled from every retailer we track. Full disclosure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on a semi-auto shotgun?+
The median listing we track sits just over $1,000, but the distribution has a real shelf at $600 to $1,000 where Retay, TriStar, Stoeger, Mossberg and the Winchester SX4 all live. Below roughly $400 you are buying imported guns with thin retailer coverage. Above $1,200 you are buying fit, finish and resale rather than function.
Is a gas or inertia action better for clays and waterfowl?+
Gas guns bleed propellant gas to cycle and feel softer, which matters when you shoot several hundred clay targets in a day. Inertia guns use recoil and a spring, run cleaner and stay lighter, which matters in a cold marsh. Fewer than a dozen listings name their operating system in the title, so you will need the manufacturer's spec page — we cannot filter it for you and we will not guess.
Why are there so few long-barrel clays guns?+
Of 1,254 semi-auto listings, only 44 state a barrel of 29 inches or more, and those average well over the category as a whole. Retailers stock what sells, and in the US that is 26 and 28 inch waterfowl and field guns. A 28 inch barrel shoots clays perfectly well; the 30 inch gun is a preference, not a requirement.
Do I need a 3.5 inch chamber for waterfowl?+
Only if you intend to shoot 3.5 inch shells, and most waterfowlers do not. 79 of our listings state a 3.5 inch chamber and they average above the category. A 3 inch gun with the right steel load and the right choke covers nearly all duck and goose shooting, and the shells are cheaper and easier to find.
Can I buy a semi-auto shotgun online?+
Yes, but it ships to a licensed dealer near you rather than to your door, and you complete the background check and paperwork there. Budget a transfer fee on top of the listed price. Barrel length and capacity rules vary by state and change, so confirm your configuration is legal where you live before ordering.
Are used semi-auto shotgun listings worth considering?+
They can be, but know what you are looking at. Only about 1% of the semi-auto listings we track are flagged used or open-box, and ten of those fourteen are Beretta — which means Beretta's apparent entry price on our shelf is a used-gun price, not a new-gun price. Read the title before you compare.
