Best Gun Safes for Home Defense
Across 103 live vault and safe listings, the $300-to-$1,000 safe effectively does not exist — which settles the home-defense storage question faster than any feature list.

A Home Defense Safe Is a Quick-Access Vault, Not a Gun Safe
These are two different products that share a word. A residential security container — the upright steel cabinet that holds a dozen long guns — is a theft and fire product. It is slow to open on purpose. A home defense vault is a single-gun box that sits in a nightstand or bolts under a bed frame, and its entire job is to keep a loaded handgun away from children and casual hands while still opening in about a second in the dark.
If you are buying for home defense, you are buying the second thing. Almost everyone who searches for "best home defense gun safe" and ends up reading a review of a 40-gun safe has been sold the wrong category.
Our catalog makes the split unusually visible, because we can see every listing at once rather than whatever one retailer chose to feature.
Why the $300-to-$1,000 Gun Safe Barely Exists
Here is the distribution of the 103 live listings in our gun vault and safe category, by price:
| Price band | Live listings |
|---|---|
| Under $25 | 21 |
| $25–$50 | 27 |
| $50–$100 | 15 |
| $100–$150 | 21 |
| $150–$300 | 15 |
| $300–$1,000 | 0 |
| $1,000+ | 4 |
That is not a rounding artifact. Widening the window slightly, exactly one listing in the entire category falls between $270 and $1,200. The four listings above $1,199 are all full-size multi-gun cabinets from a single maker. Everything else — 99 listings — is a box for one or two guns.
The practical consequence: there is no meaningful "step up" purchase for a bedside gun. You are not choosing between a $150 vault and a $600 better vault. You are choosing between a $35 lock box and a $200 quick-access vault, and then the next rung is a $1,200 cabinet that solves a different problem.
What Does a Bedside Gun Vault Cost Right Now?
Before the recommendations, the honest warning. Sorting this category by price does not surface cheap safes — it surfaces the accessories that live in the same category:
The Cheap End of Our Safe Category (Read the Titles)
Prices updated Oct 13, 2026The cheapest listing in our entire gun-safe category is an RFID sticker. Below it are a shotshell holder, a choke-tube box, and a humidity gauge. None of these are safes. Any site that builds a "cheapest gun safes" list by sorting a feed will publish exactly this list, and it is worthless as a shortlist — which is why we are showing it to you labeled rather than hiding it.
Sorted by brand, the picture becomes usable. GunVault's three live listings are the cleanest illustration of the actual price ladder in this product class, from a basic keyed lock box up to a push-button quick-access vault:
GunVault Quick-Access Vaults, Live Prices
Prices updated Oct 13, 2026Bulldog carries the widest range we track — thirteen live listings. Read this grid with care, because the two cheapest rows are concealment props (a hollow book) and the next two are vehicle boxes, not bedside vaults. The genuine nightstand vaults begin with the digital models partway down:

Is a Biometric Gun Safe Worth It?
The entry method is the only feature in this category that moves the price much, and here is the ladder from our live data, by the cheapest listing of each type:
- Key entry only — from $19.39
- Mechanical combination / push-button — from $34.29
- Electronic keypad — from $39.49
- Biometric fingerprint — from $114.99
Fireproofing is nearly absent: two listings in the category state fire resistance, starting at $159.99. If fire protection is your goal, you are shopping for the $1,200-and-up cabinet class, not a vault.
The biometric number deserves a harder look. Three listings. That is the entire live biometric selection — out of 103. A feature stocked that thinly is not a mature product tier, and you are paying roughly triple the keypad floor for it. A mechanical push-button lock has no battery to die and no sensor to fail on a damp or bloody fingertip, and it opens in the dark by feel. That is the trade-off stated plainly: biometrics are faster when they work and are a single point of failure when they don't.
What a $5 Trigger Lock Still Does That a Vault Doesn't
A vault secures one gun in one place. A cable or trigger lock secures any gun anywhere, including the ones in a closet that will never justify their own box. They are close to free:
Cheapest Gun Locks Right Now
Prices updated Oct 13, 2026We track 77 live gun lock listings averaging $16.74, from $2.79. This is the cheapest meaningful safety purchase in the entire catalog, and it is the right companion to a vault rather than a substitute for one — a trigger lock does nothing about theft and nothing about one-second access.
Should You Wait for a Sale or Shop Retailers?
This is where having the price history pays, and the answer is the opposite of the one we give for ammunition.
Across the 103 listings, 50.5% are carried by more than one retailer, and among those the median gap between the cheapest and most expensive store on the same product is 9.23%. Twenty-five of the 52 multi-retailer listings differ by 10% or more; nine differ by 25% or more. On one biometric vault we track, the two retailers are $114.99 and $179.99 — a 56.5% spread on an identical item.
But only 43.7% of these listings currently sit above their own recorded low since February 2026. Compare that with 70.7% of the 12,241 ammunition listings we track. Ammunition is usually marked up against its own history, which is what makes waiting and alerting work. Storage gear mostly isn't.
Storage: compare retailers today. Ammunition: set an alert and wait. These are different games and the data runs in opposite directions.
For the mechanics of why ammunition behaves that way, see why ammo prices move.
The Vault Is a One-Time Cost. The Ammo Isn't.
The reason we tell people not to agonize over $40 of vault: the gun inside it eats more than that in a weekend. Here is the live floor for the two cartridges that fill most home-defense guns.

A vault you buy once. A cartridge you buy forever. If you are deciding how much of the budget goes where, the storage box is the part that stops costing money. Our guides on how much ammo to actually keep on hand and how many magazines you need cover the other half of that math, and shipping restrictions explain why the delivered cost of ammunition is not the listed cost.
So What Should You Actually Buy?
Stated as decisions rather than products, because the stock in this category turns over:
- One defensive handgun by the bed — a push-button or keypad quick-access vault in the $35–$200 band, bolted down. Mechanical over biometric unless fingerprint entry is something you have personally tested.
- A defensive shotgun or rifle — a wall lock or mount rather than a box; the long-gun quick-access products in our catalog are mounting systems, and they start at $129.99.
- The rest of the collection — cable or trigger locks at a few dollars each, plus a larger cabinet only if theft or fire is the concern you are solving.
- Then stop optimizing the box and put the alert on the cartridge.
Shop the live prices above against 9mm and 12 gauge, and if you are still choosing the gun that goes in the vault, start with best home defense shotguns or best 9mm ammo.
