Best AR-15 Handguards

718 handguards are live right now. It is the one AR part genuinely worth shopping across retailers, and the one whose listing is least likely to tell you whether it fits.

Best AR-15 Handguards

What does an AR-15 handguard actually cost right now?

We track 718 live handguard listings. The cheapest is $6.49 and the most expensive is $525.00, with a median of $164.95 and an average of $169.96 — the two sitting that close tells you the shelf is not dragged around by a handful of outliers.

The distribution is lopsided in one direction. Sixteen listings are under $15, forty sit between $15 and $29, and eighty-six land in the $30 to $49 band. Then the shelf jumps: 260 listings sit between $120 and $199 and another 215 are above $200. Two thirds of the aisle is a $120-plus purchase.

Brand depth is thin at the top and wide in the middle. Midwest Industries carries 97 live listings, Magpul 47, Geissele 36, Strike Industries 32, Aero Precision 29, Bravo Company 24, Daniel Defense 20, Timber Creek 18 and Fortis 15. A further 191 rows arrive from our feeds with no brand string at all, which is its own warning about how much the listing tells you.

Hold that floor in mind. It is the number every hardware decision on an AR-15 eventually gets measured against.

Why is the cheapest listing in the handguard aisle not a handguard?

Sort the category by price and you do not get handguards. You get a polymer rail section, a handguard end cap, a pack of M-LOK covers, two different barrel nuts, a hand stop and a rail panel kit. The category is where retailers file everything that touches a handguard.

What the Cheap End of the Handguard Aisle Actually Contains

Prices updated Oct 24, 2026

That block is not a shortlist, it is a map of the trap. It is also why the "handguards from $6.49" framing you will see elsewhere is meaningless — nobody is selling a rail for $6.49. The cheapest listing in that grid is a bracket you screw onto a rail you already own.

The same aisle also serves rifles that are not AR-15s. Of the 718 listings, 241 name an AR pattern in the title, 24 name an AK or SKS, and 71 name something else entirely — Mossberg 590 and Remington 870 forends, Ruger 10/22 rails, Marlin lever adaptors, MP5 tubes. Which leaves the number that matters most.

Does the listing even tell you whether it will fit?

382 of the 718 listings name no rifle platform at all. More than half the aisle.

It gets worse when you look for the specs that actually determine fitment. Only 60 listings say "free float" and just 7 say "drop-in" — the single most important structural distinction in the category is stated on fewer than one listing in ten. Ten mention a barrel nut. Two say the nut is included.

Meanwhile 216 of the 718 state a colour or finish. The shelf is more than twice as likely to tell you the rail is flat dark earth than to tell you anything about whether it will bolt to your rifle.

Free-float or drop-in, and what each one really costs to install

The drop-in route is the cheap one, and it is honestly cheap. Magpul's MOE M-LOK handguards are the volume product here, and the grid below shows what that tier costs — with the caveat that the same brand's shotgun forends and rail panels sort in alongside them, so read the titles.

A drop-in needs one tool you may not own: something to compress the delta ring. Handguard removal tools in our index run from $15.99 to $31.39. That is the whole install cost.

Free-float is where the sticker stops being the price. The rail clamps to a new barrel nut, which means removing the old one, which means a wrench — and if your rifle still has an A2 front sight base, a low-profile gas block as well. We track 53 live barrel nut listings from $7.49 up, averaging $42.81, and 53 low-profile gas block listings from $6.99 up, averaging $37.40.

Aero Precision prices the gap inside its own catalog, which is the cleanest proof available: its 12-inch Enhanced Gen 2 M-LOK rail is $140.99 bare and $169.99 with the barrel nut — a $29.00 difference on the same rail. At 15 inches the same pair is $143.99 against $178.99, a $35.00 difference. Neither of the cheaper listings is wrong. They just are not complete.

The Install Parts the Rail Listing Does Not Mention

LBE Unlimited AR15 Barrel NUT
Barrel nut

LBE Unlimited AR15 Barrel NUT

A plain AR-15 barrel nut, carried by two retailers. Every free-float handguard clamps to one, most listings never say whether theirs is in the box, and the whole shelf of 53 live nut listings starts at $7.49. If the rail you want is silent, this is the line item you are missing.

Barrel nut wrench

NC Star AR-15 Armorer s Barrel Wrench Combo Tool

A combination armorer's wrench, two retailers. Barrel nuts are torqued, and proprietary nuts often need the maker's own spanner instead — check the rail's own documentation before you assume this one fits. Armorer's wrenches in our index start at $17.01.

For the other job entirely: compressing the delta ring to pull a two-piece drop-in handguard off. Handguard removal tools run from $15.99 to $31.39 in our data. If you are replacing a drop-in with another drop-in, this is the only tool in this list you need.

One thing worth saying plainly: free-float is not a price tier. The listings that say "free float" average $161.39 and the ones that do not average $170.71 — within about $10 of each other. The label is a fitment fact, not a quality grade, and paying more does not reliably buy you one.

Handguards are the one AR part genuinely worth price-shopping

This is where the handguard breaks the pattern of every other part on the rifle.

321 of the 718 listings — 44.7% — are stocked by two or more retailers in our data. Among those, the median gap between the cheapest and dearest retailer is 6.67%, 57% differ by at least 5%, and 42.7% differ by 10% or more. The widest live example is a Timber Creek Ultralight Enforcer 15-inch M-LOK rail, where the two retailers carrying it are $108.00 apart on the same part number.

Compare that with the rest of the AR shelf, measured the same day:

A complete upper cannot be price-shopped at all — not one of the 519 we track is carried by a second retailer. A barrel is barely shoppable at 24.0%. The handguard sits near the top of the shoppable column, and the parts that bolt to it are shoppable too.

…and the one you should not sit around waiting for

The flip side of that table is the last column. Only 36.4% of handguard listings currently sit above their own recorded low, and when they do the median gap is 6.50% — about eleven dollars on a median rail. Set that against 70.1% of ammunition listings sitting above their own low, where the discount you are waiting for is real and recurring.

So the rule inverts depending on what you are buying. On a handguard, open two tabs and buy today. On the cartridge it feeds, put an alert on it and wait — which is the argument laid out in full in why ammo prices move.

M-LOK won. KeyMod is a clearance aisle

Inside the handguard category it is 417 listings naming M-LOK against 13 naming KeyMod, with 26 quad rails and 15 straight Picatinny tubes making up most of the rest. Across our entire index the split is 1,977 M-LOK listings to 135 KeyMod — and 567 of those M-LOK rows are complete firearms, not accessories. The standard is now stamped into the guns.

The practical consequence is not about the rail, it is about everything you hang off it. A KeyMod handguard is a working handguard, but you are committing to a 135-listing accessory shelf instead of a 1,977-listing one. That is also why the discounts show up there: Bravo Company's polymer KeyMod rails sit at $24.95 to $26.95 in our data while its M-LOK MCMR rails sit at $179.99. The format being cheap is the format being cleared.

There is no standard handguard length

Barrels cluster. Across our barrel data four lengths account for most of the shelf. Handguards do not behave that way at all: across the AR-titled listings we track there are 44 distinct stated lengths, including 4.5, 4.8, 6.7, 9.2, 9.6, 10.2, 10.7, 11.8, 12.4, 12.9, 13.8, 15.2, 15.3 and 16.6 inches.

The loose clusters, with each group's median:

  • 15 inches — 42 listings, median $189.99. The rifle-length look on a 16-inch barrel.
  • 13 inches — 19 listings, median $175.99. Plus ten more at 13.5 inches, median $202.99.
  • 10 inches — 22 listings, median $159.95. Eight more at 10.5 inches, median $239.99.
  • 7 inches — 19 listings, median $99.99. The cheapest common length, and the shortest useful one.

Length is not a style choice with a price attached. The tube has to clear your gas block and stop short of your muzzle device, so the number you need comes from measuring your own rifle from the receiver face forward — not from the barrel length on the box. If you are still choosing that barrel, the barrel-length guide covers what each one commits you to, and gas system choice decides what sits under the tube.

Is a $200 rail sensible when the whole rifle costs $330?

Worth sitting with. The cheapest complete centerfire AR-pattern rifle in our index is $329.99 — and one of the listings at that price already advertises an 11-inch free-float M-LOK rail. The most expensive handguard we track is $525.00. The median complete AR-pattern rifle is $1,279.00.

So at the bottom of the market the rail is not an upgrade, it is already fitted, and replacing it means spending half the price of the gun to change something that works. At the top of the market a $250 Geissele rail is a rounding error on the build. The awkward middle is where most people actually are.

The honest comparison is not rail against rail. A median handguard at $164.95 is roughly 365 rounds of .223 at today's market floor, and the $29.00 barrel nut you forgot is about 64 more. Run your own version of that trade:

What to check before you buy a handguard

  1. Free-float or drop-in. If the listing does not say, assume nothing. Over 650 of 718 listings are silent on this.
  2. Barrel nut. Included, proprietary, or neither. Budget $7.49 and up if it is not in the box, and check whether the maker's spanner is required.
  3. Gas block clearance. An A2 front sight base blocks most free-float tubes. A low-profile block starts at $6.99.
  4. Length against your muzzle device, measured on your rifle, not inferred from the barrel.
  5. Attachment standard. M-LOK unless you have a specific reason, because that is where the accessories are.
  6. Two retailers, today. With 42.7% of multi-retailer listings differing by 10% or more, the second tab is worth more than the second week.
  7. Prices here are item-only. Our feeds do not carry shipping cost, so the delivered total is always higher than the figure on the card.

What this guide will not claim

We do not shoot groups, we do not run endurance tests and we will not tell you which rail survived a drop. There is no accuracy figure anywhere on this page because we do not have one. What we have is every live listing, what each retailer charges for it today, and how that compares with its own recorded price history since February 2026. Our full ranking methodology spells out where that line sits and why we hold it.

AmmoSpotter earns a commission when you buy through links on this page. It never changes what you pay, and it never decides what we recommend — our picks are ranked on live cost-per-round data pulled from every retailer we track. Full disclosure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a good AR-15 handguard cost?+
The median of the 718 live handguard listings we track is $164.95, and 475 of them sit at $120 or more. The aisle runs from $6.49 to $525.00, but the cheap end is mostly rail panels, covers and barrel nuts rather than handguards. Budget $120 to $200 for a free-float M-LOK rail from a known maker, and check the current grids on this page for today's floor.
Do I need a new barrel nut for a free-float handguard?+
Usually yes, and usually a proprietary one. Only 10 of the 718 listings mention a barrel nut at all and just 2 state that one is included. Aero Precision prices the gap inside its own catalog: its 12-inch Enhanced Gen 2 rail is $140.99 bare and $169.99 with the barrel nut, a $29.00 difference on the same product. Read the title and the spec list before you assume.
Is M-LOK or KeyMod better in 2026?+
The market already decided. Of the 718 live handguard listings, 417 name M-LOK and 13 name KeyMod. Across our whole index it is 1,977 M-LOK listings against 135 KeyMod, and 567 of those M-LOK rows are complete firearms — it is now a factory standard, not an upgrade. Buying KeyMod today means buying accessories from a shrinking shelf.
Should I shop around for a handguard or wait for a price drop?+
Shop. Handguards are 44.7% multi-retailer in our data, the cross-retailer spread is 6.67% at the median and 42.7% of them differ by 10% or more between stores. Only 36.4% currently sit above their own recorded low, against 70.1% of ammunition listings, so waiting is the weaker lever here and comparing retailers is the strong one.
What length handguard do I need?+
There is no standard to look up. Across the AR-titled listings we track there are 44 distinct stated lengths, clustering loosely at 15, 13, 10 and 7 inches. The rail has to clear your gas block and stop short of your muzzle device, so measure from the front of the upper receiver to the device rather than guessing from the barrel length.
Will a handguard upgrade make my rifle shoot better?+
We do not test rifles and will not claim it does. A free-float tube removes contact between the barrel and the furniture, which is a real mechanical change, but we have no accuracy data of our own and will not invent any. What we can tell you is what every listing costs, who stocks it and how that price compares with its own history.
